QM Systems develops a flexible software framework for environmental stress screening and qualification testing

The Challenge:

Environmental testing generally involves performing test sequences many times while simultaneously interacting with an environmental chamber. Since such tests run for many hours, or even days, it is highly desirable to fit as many items as possible into the chamber for testing. Whilst the solution had to run on National Instruments' TestStand product, the standard TestStand Process Models do not straightforwardly support this type of testing and the challenge was to develop appropriate add-on Process Model elements, tools and methods.

The Solution

The individual tests required during environmental testing are mostly very similar, if not identical, to those needed for Production Acceptance Testing. A principle objective was to enable maximum re-use of code and sequence developments across a wide range of test scenarios. This led to the concept of a Base Sequence for each type of device under test (DUT), containing all tests appropriate to that DUT regardless of test scenario. A default sub-set of tests are marked as appropriate for Production Acceptance Testing. Other sub-set are set up and selected during sequence execution by use of a simple Test Configuration File. Base Sequences are also structured to support parallel execution in multiple threads and sharing of resources so that many DUTs can be tested simultaneously. A separate thread is used for interaction with an environmental chamber if required.
